Lakehouse Farms - organic farm

WHO WE ARE

Lakehouse Farms is one of the most beautiful, self-sustainable farms located in the Northeast. It is situated on a breathtaking 500+ acre estate in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. At Lakehouse Farms, we grow fruits and vegetables by employing an adaptive natural farming system – no pesticides or herbicides -- with minimal weeding, pruning and watering. Our crops fight nature’s harsh environments and become stronger, denser and healthier, naturally.  We also offer a one-of-a-kind wedding and private event venue.

OUR STORY

The farm is owned and managed by three Korean-American siblings, Helen, Wendy, and Joon. They grew up in Kyung-Ki Providence of South Korea and immigrated to the United States in 1989. Today, all three siblings are industry leaders in the New York City commercial real estate world.

Helen is the Head of NY Investment Sales team at Meridian Capital Group. Wendy is the Head of NY Residential Valuation and Consulting division of Newmark Knight Frank. Joon is the CEO at Highwater Capital Group, a real-estate acquisitions and development company focused in NY metro.

Their story is a true American Dream.

FAQ:

01

How do you provide nutrients to the soil?

Lakehouse Farms employs a self-sustainable farming system. In the center of the farm, there is a beautiful 70 acre lake which provides the main source of our land’s best nutrients – aquatic weeds. During the spring and summer seasons these aquatic weeds grow. We then gather the aquatic weeds and dry, grain and spread them over our farm. These aquatic weeds are full of minerals and nutrients and serve as clean, healthy and balanced food to our soil. We also raise chickens and ducks and their manure provides additional nutrients.

02

How do you fight insects and diseases without pesticides or chemicals?

At Lakehouse Farms, we commit ourselves to being pesticides and chemical free. As a result, we lose roughly 50% of our crops to pests and diseases. We have electric fences around our farm which sometimes deter the large animals from entering the farm.  We also make large quantity of wild mugwort tea. This mugwort tea is a natural insect repellant and also helps our peppers fight diseases.

03

Why Korean red chili peppers?

The Hwang family eat a lot of spicy food… a lot!  Unfortunately, they learned that most of these pepper flakes contain red coloring chemicals (to brighten the color) and metals (to increase the product weight). Importing from a reliable source in Korea was their only means to get healthy and clean pepper flakes. After years of importing, it got too expensive. They soon realized many Korean families experienced the same issue.  The most affordable and sure way to eat clean and healthy pepper flakes?  Grow our own peppers!
